THE BIRTH OF GROWN SURFBOARDS

I was in the market for a new board and wanted something a bit different and unusual.

I came across an article on timber boards as an alternative to foamies, my interest was tweaked and teamed with a desire to get back to basics, I decided to bust out the tools and get to work building my first board. After “test riding” a couple of my new boards my mates were keen to get there hands on a woody too. I started taking a few orders and Grown Surfboards was born. We like to keep it small scale and always try to support other local businesses where possible, we believe that keeping it close to the source creates a more positive atmosphere.

Grown is all about turning positive passions into a productive and ethical business.

Stay tuned for our organic cotton T-shirt range to be released early in the New Year.

Technical info

I have always loved surfing older 70’s style boards, such as old single fins, retro twinnys as well as the more modern variations like retro styled fish, quads, etc. basically anything that is slightly different to your standard high performance short boards (mainly due to the fact that my surfing style is anything but high performance!).  I love the flow and the feel of surfing these older style boards, and I try to incorporate that into all of the hollow timber boards I make.

Most of my boards are based on the style and shapes from the era, with a few modern variations included.

Our ground timber boards are slightly heavier than your standard foam surfboards, however, being hollow they have an inherent buoyancy to them that negates this feeling of weight in the water.  Timber boards generally feel a lot faster in the water, great for making it through fatter sections and are responsive in and out of turns. They  have a nice natural flow to them that just makes you want to bust out some ‘soul arcs’! They are also good in choppy conditions as they  have the weight and rigidity to slice through the chop.

All boards are made from a recycled and plantation grown timber. Due to the natural variations in timber grains, every board has it’s own unique pattern and style.  All boards are covered with a layer of 4oz cloth and a high gloss finish  to ensure they are water tight and the high gloss finish really brings out the timber.
